How does a painting commission work?

For a commission, I work from photo reference, and I’ll ask some questions about what you are looking for in the initial conversation. We’ll chat about things such as where the painting will hang, what emotion you wish it to capture, and the style of your home and interior.

The final work is always my own interpretation of the subject and may differ to your vision, but I also try my absolute best to ensure that the artwork you receive is everything you wished for.

FAQs

How long will it take?

I am not a quick painter. Your commission may take up to 3 months for completion. Some pieces may take longer.

Will the commission be framed?

All commission work is provided unframed. Please take your painting to your local framers to frame it perfectly to your tastes and needs.

Will I own the painting?

You will own the physical copy of the painting. You will not own the copyright, which remains with me, the artist. This means you cannot use the image commercially or sell copies of the image.

I want to do something special for a loved one. Can you do. . .?

I’m happy to discuss custom projects and requirements! I may not be able to facilitate all of them, but please do get in touch and we can chat about possibilities.

What if I don’t like it?

Unfortunately, all commissioned artwork is paid upfront and is non-refundable. If you feel greatly disappointed in your artwork and feel it is not what you were promised, please have an open discussion with me, and we can discuss whether a repaint or a refund might be possible. However, these solutions are not possible if you simply change your mind.

Terms

What I will not paint: Photo-realism, high-likeness artwork, large groupings of people, fictional characters (some exceptions - please get in touch), any IP protected by copyright, cars and other vehicles, picture book illustration. Other illustration projects may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

A note about style: I paint in a loose style with hints of abstraction. All work I produce will be in this style, so please only consider working with me if you already love my style and the work I have produced recently. Thank you!
